Our Students & Services

Our program consists of specialized education and therapeutic services for children age 18 months until they transition to kindergarten who are experiencing delays in their development or have a specific developmental disability. Services are offered at our two preschool locations, (Downtown Memphis at UT Boling Center within the Medical District and Hope Church in Cordova) in the family’s home, and in community settings. These services are delivered by highly qualified staff led by licensed special education teachers, board certified behavior analysts, and therapists. Our goal is to help children reach their full potential by learning functional skills to enhance their development. Ongoing training and support is provided to our families. Because of Harwood’s two locations, we are able to serve children from all over Shelby County & surrounding areas as well as children from Mississippi and Arkansas.

Our Story

Founded in 1957, Harwood Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that provides support and education for Mid-South families and children who have developmental disabilities. Since opening its doors, Harwood Center has helped more than 5,000 children with developmental disabilities get a better start in life. Harwood’s services are provided at a very affordable rate, based on each family’s ability to pay. Due to this, Harwood strongly depends on local support to operate our programs. Our funding is dependent on our partnerships with United Way, Les Passees, as well as additional support from the East Memphis Civitan, Lichterman-Loewenberg Foundation, SPEER Charitable Trust, Children’s Foundation of Memphis, grants, contributions and agency fundraising efforts.
